Much of his childhood he lived in Tanzania .
In 1980 he studies signs in his hometown Trondheim and then he studies painting and sculpture at the Emily Carr College of Vancouver.
After studying in Vancouver Hagen follows a study painting and sculpture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where he graduated in 1990.
During and after his studies abroad has always drawn Espen Hagen . He regularly makes long treks through North America and Mexico . During these trips is Espen portraits of prominent North American Indians and the indigenous Mexican population. The striking and speaking style of work and the way Espen Hagen by combining different techniques the “character ” of his characters do capture does not go unnoticed.
There followed many exhibitions, including Vancouver, Oslo, Monaco , Croatia, Massachusetts , Cologne and in Trondheim.
In Amsterdam alone, including the Vondelpark , Gallery Donkersloot , Beurs van Berlage , The Warehouse and Hotel Okura , but also in The Hague ( Hotel Des Indes ) , Maastricht and Naarden ( Arsenal ) . From the mid 90’s Espen Hagen works closely with his friend Herman Brood . Espen exhibited twice at Cafe Dante , which once together with Bread . In 1997 she exhibited together again , this time in the Arsenal of Jan des Bouvrie in Naarden.
Through their regular joint action and the many paintings they produced together Espen Hagen is often called the successor protégé of Herman Brood.
Espen Hagen was the ” coming man ” in Dutch art painter.
Thanks to the many exhibitions both at home and abroad and his regular television appearances was the star of this highly talented artist rising. On 10 April 2008, Espen Greger Hagen deceased to the effects of a cardiac arrest .
