Description

 Dynamics of Oldenhof

The paintings of Erik Oldenhof actually go about painting itself and in that sense there is no subject where the fabric refers beyond itself . He works with big brushes, layer upon layer , wet in wet and in doing so creates an abstract composition . He usually uses a few simple geometric shapes such as blocks and then created all cross connections , trapezoids , which scraped or forcefully against the linen on. Structures in line and color that sometimes evoke strong associations with calligraphy . Actually, any art into a stage on a long search for what art means and or especially painting . Control and powerful expression go together and bring a fascinating dynamic that the work piece by piece does retain their attractiveness and freshness .

The abstract paintings of Erik Oldenhof are made up of lines and areas of color , painted directly on the canvas with wide brushes . Aspects of painting That play an important part in his work include the skin of the paint , color , light , space , shape and the controlled use of chance . Oldenhof ‘s unorthodox color use , in combination with the play or oblique lines , build up a tension , making it seem That the painting could tip over, or at any could change around on the canvas . Movements going up and down between spontaneous and controlled ways of painting can be detected in his work . He discribes this as a ‘ purposeful form of doubt .” His ultimate and constant search for is a Possibility of redefining his view of abstract painting .

Erik Oldenhof trained at the Rietveld Academy and the National Academy in Amsterdam .

Erik Oldenhof – paintings 1979 to present

The paintings of Erik Oldenhof immediately show the cadence of their origin . A row of his abstract works side by side resembles a piece of music . They are variations on a theme . Every painting is different, but has agreements with the preceding and subsequent painting. They contain the same ingredients . Erik Oldenhof works with color , playing with the material ( paint ) which is sometimes rough and pasty, then thin and transparant is applied on the canvas. In this game with material and color stands out a fixed pattern. The surfaces act as they spatially overlap each other or placed side by side. Sometimes the spatial effect accentuated by a line drawing .

The current exhibition offers the opportunity to look back at 20 years of paintings by Erik Oldenhof back. It is immediately apparent that the developments in his work is not jerky , but smooth and almost naturally occur. This gives the impression of a continuous work , creating a symphony .

The earliest paintings, which were made around 1979 , show major focus areas of the painter . Oldenhof has the need to share in monochrome surfaces . Space The wall is blue , the woman is red , the bed is lilac. This preference does an admiration for Henry Matisse suspect . But his red pointing in the direction of the German Expressionists . The colorful figuration is Oldenhof However, no expression of pure emotion , but a reason to shape.

In the subsequent period, the use of paint is pasty . Under the influence of the Wild Painting tries Oldenhof at the beginning of the eighties a wild key. The brushstroke overgrown the area . Still even these landscapes characterized by a clear division into planes . The theme of the Wild Painters does not seem to interest him. He focuses on formal painterly aspects . He expressed his preference for the Abstract Expressionists such as Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock . In this period, the decision to abstract painting . Falls

The abstract paintings that eighty founded at the beginning of the year are interesting because the pasty paint use in his current work plays a major role . In the intervening period , the late eighties early nineties , Oldenhof mainly paints the plane. His use of paint is transparent and mat. The cloths were graphic, because the contrast caused by the use of complementary colors and shapes which can be interrupted by black line structures. In his current work he left behind this way of working and playing the layers of paint thickly applied another role . Erik Oldenhof stressed that in his present work an architectural space is created . A bold brushstrokes to put away about the background depth seems to emerge. This spaciousness is a reference to the relationship of the work of Oldenhof with reality . He creates an environment space , a reminder of the landscape that surrounds us . This is a landscape in which they reflected to Pollock century admired the painting- van Ruysdael from the seventeenth century , the twentieth is .
